Course description: Organization of air traffic communications. Signal theory, time and frequency domain, units of measure, level (dB). Radiocommunications: radiocommunication system, HF, VHF, VDL, satellite communications, ACARS. Radio waves: theoretical foundations, freq. spectrum, propagation in real conditions. Operating at frequencies below and above 30MHz, distress frequencies, radio emission designators. Reliability and availability of radios, electromagnetic compatibility. The influence of electromagnetic radiation. Antennas: types, parameters. Radar antennas, antennas with electronically controlled radiation pattern. Radar technique basics: impulse radar operating principle, radar frequencies, radar development, air traffic application. Radar resolution. Radar equation. Range calculation, repetition frequency, blind speed, Doppler shift, radar resolution. Target detection (detection threshold, false alarm probability). Principle of moving targets detection. Air traffic control radar: primary radar (technical characteristics). Meteorological radar. Doppler Navigation Radar. Secondary radar (modes A, C, S). Air Collision Avoidance System (ACAS). Understanding of possible characteristic problems and solutions in secondary radar (fruit, garbling). Secondary radar (possible MSSR problems and solutions): asynchronous responses (Fruit), response overlaps (Garbling); detection and suppression of response to a query received by the side lobe: RSLS (Reception Side Lobe Suppression), ISLS (Interrogation Side Lobe Suppression), IISLS (Improved Interrogation Side Lobe Suppression). Radar coverage, coverage volume, restrictions, multiple radar coverage. Radar data processing and display: on-site radar processing, data transfer to RDPS (Radar Data Processing System), flight controller workplace data. Original radar information - PLOT and additional data - TRACK: mono radar track and multi radar track, errors in multi radar tracking processing. Radar display, Conflict detection, Radar pointers. ADS. Multilateral air traffic control system.
