The AWARE Open Day was held this week at the headquarters of Tern Systems in Iceland, bringing together more than fifty participants both on-site and online, including air traffic controllers, Air Navigation Service Provider experts, and aviation researchers from across Europe.

The AWARE project focuses on developing advanced solutions for human–AI collaboration in air traffic management. Its goal is to enable artificial intelligence systems to better understand the intentions, needs, and workload of air traffic controllers, contributing to safer and more efficient operations in complex ATM environments.

During the event, participants were introduced to the project’s key results, including the artificial situational awareness system, attention tracking tools, AI-based decision-support solutions, and validation activities carried out through human-in-the-loop simulations.

On behalf of the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences, University of Zagreb, the project coordinator, Prof. Tomislav Radišić presented the contribution of the research team and the main project outcomes.

The AWARE project is funded under the Horizon Europe programme with the support of the SESAR 3 Joint
