Basic information

Edouard Ivanjko is an Associate Professor at the Department of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ZITS), Faculty of Traffic and Transport Sciences (UNIZG-FTTS), University of Zagreb (UNIZG) where he teaches courses related to computer science, electrical engineering, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and traffic control. He is a member of the Transport Optimization Group (TOG) at the Department of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ZITS), Center of Excellence for Computer Vision (CRV), and the Centre of Research Excellence for Data Science and Advanced Cooperative Systems, Research unit Data Science. Personal research interests include intelligent transportation systems, modelling and simulation of road networks, application of computer vision and artificial intelligence in road traffic control. In collaboration with research colleagues, he assists also in research related to the development of algorithms for transport optimization, estimation and prediction of traffic parameters, and navigation of autonomous vehicles.

He is a member of the following professional organizations: IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society, ITS Croatia and KoREMA - Croatian Society for Communications, Computing, Electronics, Measurement and Control. Edouard Ivanjko actively participated in organization of several national and international conferences (International Symposium on Industrial Electronics ISIE 2005, European Conference on Mobile Robots 2009, Croatian Computer Vision Workshop in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, First international conference on transportation and logistics ICTL'2015, 9th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis ISPA2015, International Workshop on Data Science (IWDS 2016, 2017 and 2018), International Conference Science and Traffic Development (ZIRP 2018 and 2019)), and Informative workshops about the results of the finished PROM-PRO projects from the respective grant period (2016 and 2017). He participated in four scientific projects sponsored by the Croatian Ministry of Science, several EU funded projects (financed by the ESF, FP7 and the IPA program), in several professional projects in cooperation with industry and public institutions, obtained one PROM-PRO grant for young researchers from Faculty of Traffic and Transport Sciences (UNIZG-FTTS), and one short term support from the University of Zagreb (UNIZG) publishing more then 64 papers in international journals and conferences, chapters in scientific books, extended abstracts and technical reports.

ERASMUSplus visit to the Engineering school of Sao Carlos – EESC-USP, Sao Carlos, Brazil

From the 2nd to the 8th April Assoc. prof. Edouard Ivanjko visited the the Department for transport engineering, Engineering school of Sao Carlos – EESC-USP, University of São Paulo, Brazil as a guest lecturer. He presented his research results and held 10 hours of lectures to bachelor and master students from the area of Traffic control, and application of Artificial intelligence in transport and traffic sciences. He also gave an invited lecture under the title „Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems in Urban Traffic Management“ to interested professors and students promoting ERASMUSplus mobility on the University of Zagreb. The visit was hosted by Assist. prof. André Luiz Cunha and presents a continuation of the cooperation started by the student Gabriel Oliveira Melo who was working under the supervision of Assoc. prof. Edouard Ivanjko, his Ph.D. student Martin Gregurić and several master students on problems related to variable speed limit control on urban motorways with the emphasis of applying fuzzy logic for variable speed limit control. This visit was also used for planning of future cooperation on topics related to intelligent transport systems and joint research project proposals.

New paper accepted for NT2019

Our newest paper under the title “Development of TSCLab: A Tool for Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Adaptive Traffic Control Systems” has been accepted for presentation on the 5th International Conference "New Technologies, Development and Application NT-2019" which will be held from 27-29 June in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. This paper was made in the co-authorship with Daniel Pavleski and Daniela Koltovska Nechoska and presents the results of the development of a tool that enables evaluation of adaptive urban traffic control systems using the software in the loop technology. The paper is the result of a yearlong work of the authors and common research goal to develop a framework for in-depth testing of the adaptive traffic control system UTOPIA and to look into how it improves the traffic situation in Skopje, Macedonia. We all congratulate on the accepted paper and wish a successful presentation.

Attending the Third International Workshop on Data Science (IWDS 2018)

On the 16th October, 2018 the Third International Workshop on Data Science (IWDS 2018) was held in Zagreb, Croatia. It was organized by the Centre of Research Excellence for Data Science and Advanced Cooperative Systems, Research unit Data Science and the project Advanced methods and technologies in Data Science and Cooperative Systems (DATACROSS) . The aim of the workshop was to foster the interaction of researchers and exchange of new ideas in the diverse area of data science and to encourage the interaction and networking between data science researchers and practitioners from both industry and government organizations. Assoc. prof. Edouard Ivanjko participated with a poster under the title “Reinforcement Learning and its Application in Variable Speed Limit Control” presenting his work with his Ph.D. student Krešimir Kušić and colleague Martin Gregurić, Ph.D. and held a presentation to present the results of the researchers from the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences participating in the Centre of Research Excellence for Data Science and Advanced Cooperative Systems and the project DATACROSS.

Students Alan Vogel, Robert Šimić and Izidor Oremović win the Dean reward

My master students Alan Vogel, Robert Šimić and Izidor Oremović received the Dean award of the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences for their work under the title “Adaptive Control of Signal Programs for Signalized Intersection”. They worked under my supervision as part of student participation of the short-term support from the University of Zagreb "Application of deep learning in intelligent traffic control", and the Scientific Centre of Excellence for Data Science and Cooperative Systems including the corresponding project "Advanced methods and methodologies in data science and cooperative systems (DATACROSS)". In the scope of their research, my students implemented a realistic model of an isolated intersection, proposed a fuzzy logic based decision system for adaptive control of signal phase length, and evaluated the proposed control approach using the microscopic traffic simulator VISSIM and MATLAB. We all congratulate them for their success and wish a fruitful continuation of their research efforts.

New bachelor theses defended

On the 19th September, students Marko Slavulj, Robert Šimić, and Izidor Oremović successfully defended their bachelor theses under the supervision of Assoc. prof. Edouard Ivanjko. The title of Marko Slavulj's thesis was “Possibility of Applying the Arduino Development Platform for Simulation of Signalized Intersections” and Lecturer Dino Čakija acted as a co-supervisor. The students Robert Šimić and Izidor Oremović worked together to apply fuzzy logic for isolated intersection control. The respective titles were "Possibility of Applying Fuzzy Logic in Determining Phase Order for Signalized Intersections" and "Possibility of Applying Fuzzy Logic for Extending Phase Time for Signalized Intersections". We all congratulate on the successful theses defense and wish all the best in the continuation of their carriers.

New mobility grants received

During the know ending summer young researchers and students led by Assoc. Prof. Edouard Ivanjko received several mobility grants. Young researchers Martin Gregurić and Krešimir Kušić received an ERASMUSplus mobility grant to visit the School of Computer Science and Statistics at Trinity College Dublin in May 2019. The aim of this mobility is to gain new knowledge regarding multi-agent systems and deep learning. The same young researchers received also a grant to attend the 3rd International Summer School on Data Science (SSDS 2018) organized by the Centre of Research Excellence for Data Science and Advanced Cooperative Systems, Research Unit for Data Science. Young researcher Krešimir Kušić received a grant to attend the summer school 3rd cHiPSet training school “Large-Scale Data Mining and Machine Learning for Big Data Analytics” organized by the EU COST action IC1406 High-Performance Modelling and Simulation for Big Data Applications (cHiPSet). Assoc. Prof. Edouard Ivanjko received an ERASMUS mobility grant to visit the Faculty of Technical Sciences – Bitola, Department for traffic and transport in May 2019. The aim of this grant is to teach and to continue the existing cooperation with Assoc. Prof. Daniela Koltovska-Nečoska. Master students Mladen Miletić and Alan Vogel received mobility grants from the University of Zagreb program contract with the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences to present their papers on the scientific international conference ELMAR2018. The research work they will present was done under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Edouard Ivanjko, and in cooperation with the master student Borna Kapusta and bachelor students Robert Šimić and Izidor Oremović. We all congratulate them on this success and wish them a pleasant journey with fruitful discussion and research work.

Paper presentation at MED-2018

Assoc. prof. Edouard Ivanjko attended the 26th International Conference MED-2018 in the beautiful Croatian town Zadar. He successfully presented his paper “A Comparison of Different State Representations for Reinforcement Learning Based Variable Speed Limit Control” as part of the regular session “Intelligent Transport Systems”. The presented work was done in cooperation with his Ph.D. student Krešimir Kušić and postdoc Martin Gregurić. In scope of the conference attendance, assoc. prof. Edouard Ivanjko was the chair of the regular session "Fault Diagnosis and Fault Tolerant Control 1" with prof. Maquin Didier as co-chair. We all congratulate on the successful presentation of this paper and wish all the best in the continuation of the research related to the application of reinforcement learning in traffic control.

ERASMUSplus visit of Assist. prof. André Luiz Cunha

From the 04. June to the 14. June Assist. prof. André Luiz Cunha from the Department for transport engineering, Engineering school of Sao Carlos – EESC-USP, University of São Paulo, Brazil visited the Department of intelligent transportation systems on the Faculty of transport and traffic sciences, University of Zagreb under the ERASMUSplus mobility program. The visit was hosted by Assoc. prof. Edouard Ivanjko. During his visit, Assist. prof. André Luiz Cunha held a series of lectures for students explaining the application of the genetic algorithm for calibration of traffic simulation models, clustering of traffic data, sharing data of traffic users, application of computer vision in road traffic, and application of principal component analysis method in traffic. This lectures to students were also used to promote possible ERASMUSplus mobility and internship on the Engineering school of Sao Carlos – EESC-USP, University of São Paulo, Brazil. He also held an invited lecture titled “Estimating motorized travel mode choice using classifiers: An application for high-dimensional multicollinear data”. This visit is a result of the internship of the student Gabriel Oliveira Melo who was working under the supervision of Assoc. prof. Edouard Ivanjko, his Ph.D. student Martin Gregurić and several master students on problems related to variable speed limit control on urban motorways with the emphasis of applying fuzzy logic for variable speed limit control. This visit was also used for planning of future cooperation of topics related to intelligent transport systems and joint research project proposals.

New grant received

On the 14. May 2018 a new short-term support under the title "Application of deep learning in intelligent traffic control" has been approved. Financing for this 7-months new short-term support was granted from the program of the University of Zagreb for supporting scientific research activities. The research problem of this short-support is related to the research activities of the "Scientific Centre of Excellence for Data Science and Cooperative Systems". This new grant will allow the researchers from UNIZG-FTTS lead by Assoc. prof. Edouard Ivanjko financing of new high-end computer equipment to enable research related to real-time analytics of traffic data, especially data mining of GPS tracks of delivery vehicles and application of deep learning in traffic control. Additionally, mobility to international scientific conferences and summer schools will be financed also.

Ph.D. thesis defended

On the 24th April, Martin Gregurić successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis under the title “Cooperative Ramp Metering for Urban Motorways based on Machine Learning” obtaining the highest grade of Summa Cuma Laude. The thesis was done under the co-supervision of Prof. Sadko Mandžuka and Assoc. prof. Edouard Ivanjko. The main scientific contribution of the thesis is the application of cooperation in the control of the traffic on urban motorways and the framework INTEGRA that enables integration of the control knowledge of several standard algorithms for ramp metering into one control law with better performance in a wide variety of traffic demand. This is the first Ph.D. thesis defended under the co-supervision of Assoc. prof. Edouard Ivanjko. We all congratulate Martin Gregurić and wish him all the best in the continuation of his carrier.

New paper accepted for MED2018

Our newest paper under the title “A Comparison of Different State Representations for Reinforcement Learning Based Variable Speed Limit Control” has been accepted for presentation on the 26th Mediterranean Conference on Control and Automation which will be held from 19-22 June in Zadar, Republic of Croatia. This paper was made in the co-authorship with Krešmir Kušić and Martin Gregurić and presents the results of the comparison of different state representations for reinforcement learning based variable speed limit control using a realistic traffic scenario simulated using MATLAB and VISSIM. The paper is the result of a yearlong work of the authors and common research goal to apply machine learning approaches for improving the level of service on urban motorways. We all congratulate on the accepted paper and wish a successful presentation.

New baccalaureus themes accepted

On the 17th April, the Committee for baccalaureus and master theses approved three new topics for the students Izidor Oremović, Marko Slavulj, and Robert Šimić. All students will work on their thesis under the supervision of Assoc. prof. Edouard Ivanjko with the help of lecturer Dino Čakija. Approved theses are related to intelligent control of signalized urban intersections and the research currently done by Assoc. prof. Edouard Ivanjko and his young researchers Martin Gregurić, Krešimir Kušić, and Dino Čakija. We all welcome the mentioned students in our research group and wish them much success in working on their theses.

Award on the celebration of 20 years of cooperation between Siemens and the Faculty of electrical engineering, and 60 years of SIMATIC

On the 13th April Siemens celebrated the first 20 years of cooperation with the Faculty of electrical engineering, and 60 years of SIMATIC. More details about the celebration can be found in the following article published in the business newspaper Poslovni dnevnik. On this celebration Assoc. prof. Edouard Ivanjko was awarded for his achievements in improving teaching of students and industry seminars by applying the Siemens SIMATIC automatization system. We all congratulate him on this award and wish him the very best in continuation of his career.

New paper accepted for the journal PROMET - Traffic&Transportation

Our newest paper under the title “Creating infrastructure for urban mobility: Case study of Skopje” has been accepted for publication in the journal PROMET - Traffic&Transportation. This paper was made in the co-authorship with Daniel Pavleski and Assist. Prof. Daniela Koltovska Nechoska and presents the results of investigation possible infrastructure upgrades for improving the traffic situation in the city of Skopje, Macedonia. The paper is the result of a yearlong cooperation between the authors and common research goal to improve the traffic situation in the local community. Expected date of publication is the second half of 2018. We all congratulate on the accepted paper and wish a successful continuation of the existing cooperation.

New paper accepted for the International Journal of Wine Business Research

Our newest paper under the title “Q-methodology: Theoretical framework for policy making in the Croatian Wine Sector” has been accepted for publication in the International Journal of Wine Business Research. This paper was made in the co-authorship with Lucijano Jakšić and Assoc. Prof. Mario Njavro and presents the results of applying Q-methodology for producing policies that consider most significant problems of stakeholders in the wine business. The paper is the result of a yearlong cooperation between the authors and common research goal to improve the perspectives of Croatian SMEs in the wine sector. Expected date of publication is the end of 2018. We all congratulate on the accepted paper.
