Education and training are the backbone of the transport sector: they attract youngsters to the profession, educate and train them to achieve the knowledge, skills and proficiency required to be able to execute their future job in a safe, secure and sustainable way and also offer lifelong learning programmes to improve competences and skills of current employees or inactive workforce and ultimate employability opportunities thereof.
Addressing the major barrier remaining in the Danube riparian countries after adoption of a common European legal framework governing skills and qualifications in IWT sector, Innovative SKILLS shall attempt to solve the shortage of qualified personnel, one of EUSDR Priority Area 1a targets, by aligning skills and competences with current and future labour market requirements and promote entrepreneurship for Danube navigation businesses among youth and adults.

A holistic approach is adopted towards inland navigation (IWT) as part of a smart integrated multimodal transport system in the project’s attempt to offer solutions ensuring that IWT becomes a more attractive sector especially for youth in order to rejuvenate the IWT staff in high proportion aged 50+.
Entrepreneurial and digital skills will be developed to match latest innovations and digital technologies, based on appropriate education and training and lifelong learning programmes responding to tomorrow’s needs of the transport labour market, addressing PA 1a Topic 2 and aiming at raising the operational efficiency of vessels by improving competences of IWT staff and thus enhancing competitiveness of the sector. In addition, Topic 3 Reduction of administrative barriers in Danube navigation is tackled through logistics courses including border control procedures to be mastered by IWT staff and intended to reduce waiting times at border crossings as well as the duration of controls, beneficial for the inland waterway industry and contributing to the achievement of EUSDR PA1a targets.

Objectives of Innovative SKILLS project are fully coherent with topics analysed and researched by Faculty, particularly that special focus of recent activities is set on increased mobility of inland labour force, prospects for better jobs and increased revenues, hence increased economic growth in Croatia. Cooperation with HR authorities, especially the Ministry of Transport, with Sava Commission, fellow members of EDINNA Association and representatives of IWT business sector will help Faculty to bring a consistent contribution to preparation of project survey encompassing not only HR but also neighbouring countries (RS and SK) while experience gained by Faculty in former SEE & current DTP projects in both preparation of project proposals as well as their successful implementation warrantees their relevant contribution to project outputs.
