Air Traffic Control enters a new era: AI assistants on the Horizon

Our department is actively involved in the research project AWARE, which aims to develop an AI-based assistant to support air traffic controllers. The project is currently in the data collection phase, where real operational input is gathered in collaboration with controllers. The goal is to understand exactly when and how specific tasks are performed during their work.

Researcher Kristina Samardžić, explained that the collected data will be used to train machine learning systems capable of recognizing the intentions and goals of controllers, offering intelligent support in task execution. The AI will not replace human operators but will serve as a real-time assistant to improve accuracy and safety in air traffic management.

Due to the relevance and innovative nature of the project, the team was recently visited by Croatian Radiotelevision (HRT), which featured a report highlighting the progress and goals of the AWARE project.

The project is ongoing, and our department continues to play a key role in testing and developing the system within real operational environments.
