“Drone Wall” – prof.dr.sc. Doris Novak on european security strategy

In a recent feature aired on Croatia’s national television (HRT), prof. dr. sc. Doris Novak, professor at the Department of Aeronautics, Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences, spoke about the European Union’s plan to build a so-called “drone wall” along its eastern borders.

The initiative aims to establish a broad network of electronic systems capable of detecting and neutralizing hostile unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) along more than 6,000 kilometers of border by 2027. As prof.dr.sc. Novak explained, this is not a physical wall, but a sophisticated integration of electronic warfare systems such as radio frequency jamming, spoofing, and in some cases, drone interception or takeover. The system would be complemented by conventional air defense units stationed at strategic points.

prof.dr.sc. Novak emphasized that Croatia has the knowledge, technology, and academic expertise to meaningfully contribute, particularly in the field of maritime and underwater drones. Research teams and start-up companies associated with the University of Zagreb are already working on relevant innovations in this area.

Our department is proud to be part of the effort to shape Europe’s secure technological future.
