Outstanding achievement: aeronautics students win the Rector’s Award!

We are proud to announce that students Sandra Stipetić, Mila Ivanković, Bruno Bilić, and Matko Stipičević from the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences, University of Zagreb, have been awarded the Rector’s Award for the academic year 2024/2025 in the category of team scientific and artistic work. This prestigious recognition is a testament to their dedication, knowledge, and excellence in scientific research.

Their work, titled “Development of a YOLO model for drone detection in thermal images,” was conducted at the Department of Aeronautics under the mentorship of assoc. prof. dr. sc. Tomislav Radišić.

The research focuses on developing and training an object detection model capable of identifying unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in thermal imagery. By combining visual and thermal datasets collected using drones equipped with dual cameras, the team developed a model capable of detecting UAVs even in low-visibility conditions such as night, fog, or smoke. This work contributes to the advancement of airspace monitoring, surveillance, and drone safety systems.

Congratulations to the team on this remarkable achievement! You can read the paper here
