The International Road Federation award committee has selected the Research Team of the Institute for Traffic Signalization of the Faculty of Transport Sciences, University of Zagreb project entitled “Application of RFID Technology for Automatic Updating of Traffic Signs Database Inventory” in the category Quality Management, as the winning project for the Global Road Achievement Award 2018 (GRAA).
This project is the result of the two-year creation of the Croatian state roads traffic signs database, which took place from 2015 to 2017, so that the pilot project of applying RFID technology for automatic updating of the traffic sign database could start at the beginning of 2018. The main objective of the project was to enable more efficient and faster checking and updating of the traffic signs database. For this purpose, the vehicle used for standard road patrol is equipped with an RFID reader, antennas, and a laptop, and during a normal drive time, RFID "tags" data is read from the signs, and thus their database is automatically updated. The aim is to ensure the adequate quality of traffic signs needed for the road users while at the same time optimizing activities and maintenance costs.
The Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences team developed the project of using RFID technology to automatically update the traffic signs database in cooperation with HRVATSKE CESTE D.O.O., as a national company for the management, construction and maintenance of state roads, and SMART VIEW D.O.O. company from Zagreb.
